Nervous about your upcoming engagement session? Here are my top 5 tips:

(with bonus tips!!)

Hey there!

Let's talk about something that makes a lot of couples nervous: engagement photos. I totally get it - the idea of being in front of a camera can feel awkward and intimidating. But trust me, it doesn't have to be. Check out the 5 tips below to help ease some of those nerves you may be feeling.

1. Find your photographer and get booked asap!

This should be the hardest part of the process! It's tough choosing the photographer you want to book for your wedding.  So find the one whose style you love best and begin the process of booking with them for an engagement session. An engagement session gives you the perfect pictures for a social media announcement or to send out on invitations or save the dates. This will also help you get a feel for your photographer's shooting vibe, personality, and their connection with you both. Once you have an engagement session booked, you may need to find backups. Not every photographer is going to work out for you. Whether that is they don't have the wedding date available on their calendar, or they just don't match your vibe as a couple like you thought they would, and that's okay!

That is why it is important to have backup photographers in mind. This is also why it is important that your photographer meet you before any kind of session. Whether that is over coffee, or zoom. This meeting is important to help establish that photographer-client dynamic we often talk about in the photo business. We can get to know each other and get a feel for the dreams you may have for your photos, all over a warm, delicious cappuccino!

Bonus Tip: Always follow your favorite photographers on your Socials. That way, you can be on the lookout for any deals or giveaways they may offer, you may be able to land your next session at a discount, or even free!

2. What to wear?

This part is pretty important, but the reasoning might not be what you think it is. It's so great if you and your fiancé are wearing clothes with the perfect colors that complement each other, most photographers will absolutely love that! This tip isn't necessarily about that. But it is about wearing something that YOU feel comfortable in.

As a candid photographer, we love nothing better than getting those natural authentic photos of our clients, and there is no better way than to do that in something that you are perfectly yourself in! This allows you and your fiancé to be yourselves and open up in front of the camera.

Bonus Tip:  While it is good to wear something you are comfy in and that is what we want, try to avoid super busy patterns that can be distracting. Instead, opt for solid colors or subtle textures that will fit well with the golden hour theme. Bonus points if it is neutrals!!

Bonus Tip 2: Ask your photographer about bringing 2-3 outfit options to give yourself some variety - maybe one dressy, one casual, and something that shows off your personality.

Bonus Tip 3: A good photographer isn't just taking pictures - they're your personal hype person! We're here to make you look and feel amazing. Don't be afraid to share your concerns or ask for guidance during the shoot.

3. Golden hour

Golden hour - that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset - it's a photographer's paradise for engagement sessions.

Here's why:

  •     Beautiful, unmatched lighting
  •     Soft, warm natural light
  •     Reduces harsh shadows on couples
  •     Creates a perfect romantic, dreamy atmosphere
  •     Provides beautiful golden/amber tones

Practical Tips for Couples

  •     Be prepared to shoot and shoot quickly during this limited timeframe
  •     Dress comfortably for potentially cooler temperatures or bring a light jacket/wrap you can easily remove
  •     Remember to just be your authentic selves during this time

What to Expect

  •     Incredibly romantic, soft lighting
  •     Stunning natural backdrops
  •     Photos that look like they're straight out of a movie scene
  •     Minimal need for artificial lighting or heavy editing, making faster turn around for photos!

Most professional photographers will recommend scheduling at least part of your session during golden hour. The difference in photo quality is remarkable - natural, glowing, and absolutely magical.

Bonus Tip: Golden hour typically lasts about 30–45 minutes, so be ready to get the most out of this timeframe!

4. Embrace the Awkward

Let's be real - most couples feel a bit weird at first in front of the camera. And that's totally okay! Those initial awkward moments often lead to the most genuine laughs and most authentic shots. If something feels silly, lean into it. Some of the best photos come from those unscripted, giggly moments when you're just being yourselves.

5. Choose a Location That Feels Like "You"

Pick a place that tells your love story. Maybe it's where you first met, a favorite hiking trail, or just a spot that makes you both feel comfortable and relaxed. When you're in a space that feels natural, your genuine connection will shine through. As your photographer, we want to draw out that genuine love and emotion that you have for each other. There is no better way to do that than in a meaningful spot that is significant to you as a couple.

6. Have a Pre-Session Drink or Fun Activity Together (I know I said 5, but I just couldn't help myself)

Nerves are perfectly normal right up into the session! Nothing breaks them like grabbing a coffee beforehand or doing something fun that gets you both relaxed. A little pre-photoshoot date can work wonders for your comfort level. Remember, these photos are about celebrating YOUR love story. There's no "perfect" way to do this - just be wonderfully, uniquely you.

Bonus tip: Take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. This is about celebrating your love, not creating a perfect performance. Be yourself, and don't shy away from that when the camera is out.

These tips will hopefully make your engagement session perfect and give you the confidence to get in front of the camera!
